Welcome to SusanRiley Photography and Education! This is a unique site for both people in the Maryland area who are looking for a family photographer, and to help others learn how to capture their own stories through photography and graphic design.
I’m an educator at heart – I have been teaching for ten years and also run a very successful arts integration website at EducationCloset.com teaching others how to use arts integration in the classroom. I also happen to be a mom to a beautiful little girl named Emma. When she was born, I knew I didn’t want to miss a moment of her life, so I picked up my point and shoot camera and started taking pictures. I soon realized I could do so much more if I had a dSLR camera and editing software, so I saved up and started to really dive in. The rest of the story stems from there. I now take newborn, child and family photography here in Maryland and enjoy every moment!
However, I want you all to know that I’m still learning. That’s the mark of a true professional – you keep up on new techniques and enhance the ones you already have. I also know what it’s like to be a mom on a budget. So if you’d like to try your hand at taking pictures of your family’s special moments, or learn how to design those cute announcements, I’m here to help! I’m going to share the techniques that I learn and pass along other resources for you to use as well right here on my photography website.
Why would I do this?
I know there are a lot of pro photographers out there who would (or are?) upset with me for setting up my website this way. Please know, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t invest in professional pictures – if you want to. I believe whole-heartedly in the art of professional photography and don’t believe you can capture that essence with a point and shoot and a one-hour photo shop around the corner.
However, as a professional, if you hire me I want it to be because you believe I can capture something through my art that you can’t do at home. I know that I can offer that to you and your family, which is why I don’t mind sharing my knowledge freely with you. You should be able to try it out on your own, too. But every person comes to photography with a unique vision – if you would rather use yours than mine, then I’m glad to help you find that vision. If, however, you would rather sit back and enjoy the day of getting your pictures taken by a professional, I can offer that too. 🙂
We can all learn the techniques and tools to use to capture our family’s unique stories. I can’t wait to go on this journey with you!
